Giving Back
March 2017: growth[period] is proud to support Shelter House, a Fairfax County-based non-profit that provides crisis intervention, safe housing, and supportive services to promote self-sufficiency for homeless families and victims of domestic violence. Shelter House was founded in 1981 and in 2010 became the first non-profit to operate Artemis House, Fairfax County’s only 24-hour domestic violence shelter. Since 1981, Shelter House has transitioned from managing homeless issues to establishing strategies to end homelessness within the community by working closely with State, County, large businesses, small businesses, and individuals in order to acquire the resouces to meet their goals.
February 2017: growth[period] supports the Breast Cancer Fund, a health-focused non-profit that works to connect the dots between breast cancer and exposures to chemicals and radiation in our everyday environments. The Fund’s vision is to shape a world where most breast cancer can be prevented and safe detection and treatment options are standard and available to all. The organization has been successful in informing and mobilizing a public that holds government and businesses accountable for protecting health and limiting exposure to chemicals that have been linked to increasing risk of breast cancer incidence. Prevention, stopping breast cancer before it starts by eliminating environmental causes, is the top priority at the Breast Cancer Fund.
September 2016: growth[period] is pleased to once again support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS’s) Light The Night Walk, an annual fundraising campaign for blood cancer cures research. Participants raise an average of $250 each, which goes towards funding reasearch on therapies and treatments, providing patients with free educational materials and support programs, advancing advocacy to ensure patient access to treatments, and providing one-on-one patient assistance through the LLS Information Resource Center. This walk is one of LLS’s largest fundraising events.

August 2016: growth[period] is pleased to announce our support of the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimers, a nationwide event that raises awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. The Association has provided more than $350 million to over 2,300 scientific proposals, and provides information, support groups, care consultation, education, and emergency response services for families and professionals. The annual walk was established in 1989, when 9 Alzheimer’s Association Chapters raised almost $150 thousand from approximately 1,200 participants, and in 2015 more than 50,000 teams participated and raised over $75 million.
August 2016: growth[period] is proud to support the American Cancer Society (ACS), a nationwide voluntary health organization that works to eliminate cancer as a major health problem. ACS was founded in 1913 and now has over 900 offices across 11 geographic regions in the United States, as well as a network of approximately 2.5 million volunteers. The organization provides grants to researchers, organizes public health campaigns, and offers resources about nutrition and physical activity, quitting smoking, and cancer screening tests. ACS is credited with discovering the link between smoking and cancer, establishing the link between obesity and multiple types of cancer, and developing drugs to treat leukemia and advanced breast cancer, among many other accomplishments.
June 2016: growth[period] is pleased to announce that we are supporters of Water.org, a non-profit developmental aid organization devoted to providing access to clean, sanitary water for the hundreds of millions of people around the world who do not have access to safe water. This organization was formed through a merger between H2O Africa, which was co-founded by Matt Damon, and WaterParters, which was co-founded by Gary White. Together, they work to provide aid to regions of developing countries that lack safe drinking water and sanitation.
Water.org’s approach to addressing this global issue focuses on removing barriers, increasing access, and empowering people, in order to create a long-term solution that benefits each individual community. Their WaterCredit initiative offers small, easy to pay off, private loans to families in need for water connections and/or toilets, and their New Ventures Fund is a source of innovation funding to pilot, disseminate, and scale initiatives that address the underlying causes of the water crisis.
May 2016: growth[period] is pleased to suppot Don Bosco Preparatory High School, a high school for boys founded in 1915 by the Salesians of Don Bosco. The school is located in Northern New Jersey and has an enrollment of close to 900 students. Don Bosco is well known for its athletic teams, known as the Ironmen, and provides rigorous academics at the AP, honors, and college prep levels.
Gifts to Don Bosco go to support areas of greatest need, ensuring the quality, securtity, and effectiveness of the school’s campus and facilities. Specific areas of typical need include tuition assistance, program enrichment, and school operations. Don Bosco Prep has granted diplomas to 10,500 men from 1915 through 2015, and all students are required to complete 100 hours of community service prior to graduation.
April 2016: growth[period] is proud to contribute to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Man & Woman of the Year (MWOY) fundraising campaign. The MWOY effort is a community-focused event that raises funds for LLS blood cancer research in honor of local children who are blood cancer survirors, the Boy and Girl of the year. Each year, the titles are awarded to the man and woman in the community who raise the most funds during the ten week long campaign, and the top fundraisers overall are awarded national titles.
To date, MWOY fundraisers have helped the LLS invest over $1 billion in research to advance innovative, breakthrough treatments in support of LLS’s goal of a world without blood cancers. This campaign is held annually between February and June, and Man & Woman candidates come from diverse backgrounds and experiences. All nominees share a common goal: to find cures for blood cancer.
March 2016: COO Kate Pickworth and her will be participating in the upcoming Histio Hike Shenandoah on April 29th-30th in order to raise awareness and funds for the Histiocytosis Association. This annual hike has raised nearly $500,000 to support the Association’s mission of raising awareness about histiocytic disorders, providing educational and emotional support, and funding research leading to better treatments and a cure, and this year the organizers are hoping to exceed that mark.
The Histiocytosis Association is a world leader in supporting scientific research into histiocytic disorders, and to date has awarded 168 research grants, worth over $5.3 million, to investigators across the globe. The Association is the only organization dedicated to connecting patients and the medical community in order to grow and share knowledge of histiocytic disorders, provide critical emotional and educational support to patients and families, and identify and fund key research initiatives.
March 2015: growth[period] is proud to support Kate’s Cause, a fundraiser aimed at raise awareness and funds for pediatric cancer research. Only 4% of US Federal funding is solely dedicated to childhood cancer research, and there remains a large gap between the funding provided by pharmaceutical companies for the development of adult cancer treatments and that provided for childhood cancer therapies. Kate’s Cause seeks to draw attention to this gap and work towards finding a cure for childhood cancers.
